Job Description

Position Summary

This is a unique paid experience for law students who want to do substantive work this summer on legal and policy matters involving Minnesota local governments and their communities. If you are a law student who is interested in government and public service work but not necessarily wedded to the idea of working for a state or federal agency, or legal services or non-profits, consider the role of a municipal lawyer. This clerkship, housed in the General Counsel’s Office of the League of Minnesota Cities, provides students with hands-on experiences and shadowing opportunities in various aspects of municipal law and practice areas including litigation, research, amicus program and corporate work.

Program Experience

During the clerkship the following tasks and opportunities may be available:

  • Conduct routine legal research in various aspects of municipal law including criminal justice, labor and employment, housing, land use, government finance, cannabis regulation, and real estate.
  • Write and/or revise research materials on municipal law topics.
  • Review and summarize state and federal legislation impacting cities.
  • Review trends in relevant case law, policy, and administrative law decisions affecting cities.
  • Exposure to various practice areas including litigation, research, amicus program and corporate work with opportunities to interact with in-house counsel as well as cities and their public law offices.
  • Professional development opportunities with municipal attorneys representing cities across the state.

Participating Requirements

  • Enrolled in law school, having completed at least a year of coursework, including one writing course.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures involved in research.
  • The clerkship is intended to last 10-12 weeks, with up to 40 hours of work per week.
  • The League maintains a flexible hybrid work environment. Because this clerkship is intended to provide students with exposure to municipal law experiences, law clerks are expected to work in the St. Paul office approximately 75% of the time.
  • This is a non-exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act and will pay $29.07/hour.
  • Ability to travel between worksites and to off-site events. Must provide own transportation.
  • Excellent communications skills.
  • Discreet and capable to be trusted with confidential and sensitive information.
  • Curious and willing work ethic and a clear desire to learn and develop.

Compensation This is a non-exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act and will pay $29.07/hr.

Application Materials : Please include resume and cover letter.

Recruitment Timeline
  • First review of applications will take place on January 5, 2026.
  • Interviews are projected for mid-January.
  • Tentative start date: May 26, 2026.
